One dead after Sequim home destroyed by fire

SEQUIM, WA – An elderly man who suffered serious burns after his home in Sequim caught fire last Tuesday night has passed away, reports the Peninsula Daily News.

The preliminary report stated the fire occurred at a house on the 900 block of South Third Avenue around 9:24 p.m.

When fire crews arrived, they were met with flames covering about 70% of the doublewide modular home.

The 82-year-old male resident escaped the building but sustained serious burns covering more than 50% of his body. He was transported to the Jamestown Medical Center helistop before being flown to Harborview Medical Center for treatment. He later passed away from his injuries in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Assistant Chief Dan Orr said investigators believe the fire began near a chair in his living room, though the cause is unclear.

Over 20 firefighters battled the blaze but it eventually destroyed the house.

South Third Avenue was temporarily closed so that firefighters could access a fire hydrant on the street.
